Password Change - FAQs

How do I change my password for my Google account?

Your Google credentials are tied to your network credentials (email and computer login). Once you change your network credentials go to www.vvsd.org/google on a computer (NOT a chromebook) and login with your network credentials. This will update your Google credentials.

How do I update the password on my mobile device?

If your password has been successfully changed, you will need to update your mobile devices (e.g. iPhone, iPad, tablet, android) Please follow this link for instructions.

Why do I have to change my password(s)?

In the Fall of 2009 the District experienced an email account breach. In order to increase District security, we are now requiring all staff to change their passwords 2 times per year for both their computer logon account (also known as your network account, which includes your email) and their AS400 logon.

When will I have to change my password(s)?

In the fall around the time change and in mid-April. You can also change it at any date after that when you are in the District. You will not be able to check your email nor access District resources until you have completed the password change.

How do I change my password at work or at home?

At Work

  • You will need to complete this on a District computer connected to the District network.

  • When you enter your user name on the computer you will be prompted to type in your old computer logon password and then your new computer logon password.

  • Confirm the new computer logon password and click OK.

  • If you are not prompted to change your password then press Control + Alt + Delete and click Change Password.

  • When you log on to the AS400 you will see a window that asks you if you want to change your password. You need to select Yes. Another screen will pop up and you will be prompted to type in your old AS400 password and then your new AS400 password.

  • Confirm the new AS400 password and click OK.

Using the Cloud

  • In order to change your password at home, via the cloud, your password must be reset. This reset happens twice a year when everyone must change their password or if you call the help desk at 815-886-7246 ext. 6222 or 815-372-6222 and request your password to be changed.

  • Click here to change your password using cloud.

What are the criteria for the new password(s)?

This new password should be at least 8 characters in length (and no longer than 10 for CIMS) and have at least 3 of the following 4 criteria:

  • Have at least 1 letter that is UPPERCASE.

  • Have at least 1 letter that is lowercase.

  • Have at least 1 number in the password (but do not start the password with a number).

  • Have at least 1 unique character, either # (pound sign) or @ (at sign) or $ (dollar sign).

These criteria will ensure that you can use the same password for both your computer logon account (including your email) and your AS400 account.

Password examples that will work for both systems:

Good Example: G0BEARs85

This will work because it has at least 8 characters, a lowercase letter with an UPPERCASE letter and at least one number.

Better Example: #ST55lers09

This will work because it has at least 8 characters, 2 UPPERCASE letters, 4 lowercase letters, 4 numbers and a unique character, the # pound sign. It is also a stronger password as it has numbers as letters, and a unique character making it harder to replicate.

Best Example: $Up5Rb@Wl85

This will work because it has at least 8 characters, 3 UPPERCASE letters, 3 lowercase letters, 3 numbers and 2 unique characters, the $ dollar sign and the @ ampersand sign. It is also a much stronger password as it is longer, and has both numbers and characters interspersed between the letters within a phrase making it harder to replicate.

Password examples that will NOT work for both systems:

vvsd

This only has 4 characters. It does not include UPPERCASE and lowercase letters, no numbers, no unique characters.

Teacher

This has only 6 characters and has an UPPERCASE letter and lower case letters. It does not include a number nor a unique character.

29R@by

This has only 6 characters, has an UPPERCASE letter, 2 lowercase letters and 2 numbers and a unique character BUT it starts with a number.

I believe my account or password may have been compromised, what should I do?

If your account or password gets compromised or you believe that it may have been compromised, please notify the helpdesk immediately so we can verify your account details and walk you through a password change. Call Helpdesk at 815-886-7246 ext. 6222 or 815-372-6222 and request a password reset.

Why do we have to meet certain criteria for password length and complexity?

For passwords to be effective they need to have some level of complexity and length. We are using industry standards for the new criteria.

The length of my password is more than 10 characters and it works, why?

The criteria set out will ensure that you can use the same password for both the computer logon account (including your email) and the AS400 account. The computer logon password can be longer than 10 characters. The AS400 only accepts 10 characters.

My password has different unique characters and it works, why?

The criteria set out will ensure that you can use the same password for both the computer logon account (including your email) and the AS400 account. The computer logon password can have different unique characters. The AS400 will only accept either # (pound sign) or @ (at sign) or $ (dollar sign).

Why do I have to change my password for the network and AS400 separately? Why can’t I change it once and the change automatically works on both system?

At this time we do not have a single sign on procedure. This is something that the District is working towards.

I just changed my password, do I have to do it again?

Yes, if you changed your password prior to scheduled password change you will still need to change the password again on that date.

I’ve forgotten my password, what procedure should they follow?

Please call the Helpdesk at 815-886-7246 ext. 6222 or 815-372-6222.

I will forget my password, where should I store it?

If you need to store the password, put it in your wallet. You keep this safe and will know if it is ever missing (that should be true of your password as well). You wouldn’t share your wallet with anyone else and you shouldn’t share your password either. DO NOT put it on a Post-it note on your monitor nor under your keyboard (everyone knows that trick).

If your password gets compromised or you believe that it may have been compromised, please notify the helpdesk immediately so we can verify your account details and walk you through a password change. Call Helpdesk at 815-886-7246 ext. 6222 or 815-372-6222.
