Kindergarten Curriculum

Listed below are the skill sets and knowledge expected of all kindergarten students by the end of the year. Please be aware of these expectations and work in cooperation with your child's teacher to assist your child in acquiring these skills. If you have any questions about the expectations, please contact your building principal. The expectations are separated into the four core curriculum areas.

Language Arts/Reading

  • Identify letters
  • Distinguish letter sounds
  • Use letter-sounds and high frequency words to begin to read and write
  • Discuss prior knowledge of topics, relate to text, and make predictions before reading
  • Tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end
  • Write simple two to three word sentences using mechanics correctly
  • Differentiate between words that rhyme and those that do not; supply rhyming words
  • Tracks print left to right
  • Identify sight words in isolation and within text
  • Complete a two-step task based on oral instructions

Mathematics

  • Match numerals to the correct number of objects
  • Touch count 1-20
  • Compare less than, greater than, and equal to
  • Identify, write, and order numerals 0-20
  • Identify and name penny, nickel, dime
  • Recognize attributes and sort objects
  • Identify, extend, and create patterns AB, ABB, ABC
  • Understand comparative and positional terms: like, different, more, less, equal, above, below, left, right
  • Identify shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle
  • Solve problems by using data from a graph

Science

Scientific Inquiry (Problem, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedures, Results, Conclusion)

Physical:

  • Sort and classify objects by size, shape, color

Earth:

  • Make daily weather observations
  • Name and identify seasons

Life:

  • Know the difference between living and non-living things

Space:

  • Learn the main bodies of the solar system: sun, moon, earth, planets
  • Know the relationship between earth, sun, and moon

Health:

  • Safety
  • Understand illness prevention (i.e. dental health, washing hands, etc.)

Social Sciences

  • Explain why consumers make choices (needs and wants)
  • Identify community helpers, public buildings, events in the local community, and national icons (i.e. American flag)
  • Identify state and national holidays: Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday, President's Day, and Memorial Day
