Building Operations and Maintenance Department
Director: Eugene Egizio
The Valley View School District consists of 21 schools/locations totaling approximately 2.4 million square feet. The grounds include 435 acres of grass to mow and 103 acres of asphalt to snow plow and maintain as well as 57 acres of buildings. An essential factor in the efficient operation of a school district is a well-organized, responsive building operations and maintenance department.
The operation generally includes the day-to-day services necessary to maintain the buildings and grounds in a usable condition. In addition to the above mentioned mowing and plowing, the department's responsibilities include repairs, replacements, and renovations, as needed, to maintain the buildings' heating and cooling, lighting, electrical, plumbing and equipment, to name a few.
During the summer we will be renovating eight (8) schools in the district. The renovations will include new lighting, ceilings, floors and provide additional storage in each classroom. More power and data outlets will be provided for the ever-growing need for more technology use in the classroom. Also, we will be upgrading the heating/cooling systems in the schools for better temperature control.
Finance
Director: Joanne Bourg
The finance department has a variety of responsibilities including:
Payroll processing for over 2,800 employees every two weeks
Payment of over 22,250 invoices annually
Management of a $219.2 million annual budget
Investment of District funds and cash flow management
Administration of the life, medical, dental and disability benefits of our employees
Administration of the District's risk programs for property and casualty
The District's finances and procedures are audited on an annual basis. In addition, the District has consistently been awarded the Association of School Business Officials Annual Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting.
Food Services
Director: Sharon Nichols
The food service department prepares meals on site in each school kitchen throughout the district. About 135 staff members prepare and serve over 14,500 meals each day. In addition to lunch, breakfast is available in 12 of the district's schools, and a large selection of a la carte items is available to middle and high school students.
All students have an account with the department. Parents can deposit money in their student's account. Students access the funds at breakfast or lunch by swiping their bar coded ID in the card reader or inputting their PIN number at the register.
The food service department also administers the Free and Reduced Price Lunch Program. Applications are sent home at the beginning of each school year and are available in each school office. Any questions that you may have regarding the services of the food service department should be directed to the main office at 815-886-7246, ext. 266.
Print Shop
Director: Daniel Strodtman
The print shop is a complete printing facility that includes full service printing as well as a quick copy operation. Full service printing offers typesetting, color presswork, and complete bindery. An example of this service is the Parent/Student Handbooks. Our quick copy operation handles large volumes of materials that are reproduced on several high volume copiers. This operation runs seven days a week. Variable Data printing such as middle and high school report cards is also available.
During a typical year the printing operation will run over 48,000 jobs, that total 36,000,000 copies, or half a million pounds of paper. Throughout the year the print shop will run 2,000,000 envelopes, and 3,000,000 sheets of carbonless paper. During an average day, when students are in session, the print shop will run 250 jobs, use 5,000 staples, and use more than 300 dollars worth of toner.
Purchasing Department
Director: Sally Ann Durante
The Purchasing Department is a division of Administrative Services designated to obtain supplies, equipment and services to support the educational mission of the School District. Purchases for the School District are made competitively where practicable. Performance, quality, suitability, delivery and service are factors considered before purchasing. All purchases are made according to the provisions of the Illinois Procurement Code and other applicable state and federal regulations. The Purchasing Department is available to assist departments in procurement activities.
Illinois ASBO instituted a Procurement Card (P-card) program for school districts, community colleges and other educational entities in Illinois. This program provides an efficient, cost-effective method of purchasing and paying for small-dollar repetitive purchases which can result in a significant reduction in the volume of purchase orders, invoices and checks processed.
In the spring of 2005, the district implemented the P-card program to all administrators and district employees who are directly involved in purchasing items for their building and/or department. The district currently has two hundred and thirty users and there has been a definite reduction in the volume of paperwork processed. The p-card program has proven to be successful.
For purchasing and p-card related questions, please call 815/886-2700, ext. 281.
