Dress Code and Telephone Usage

 What should I wear today?

We don't have a school uniform at Humphrey, but we do have a dress code. Below are some things to consider when you're deciding what to wear to school.

1. You must wear appropriate shoes. You're encouraged to wear comfortable footwear. Remember: if you choose to wear sandals, platform shoes, or boots, you will need to bring a pair of gym shoes and socks for physical education class.

2. Your clothing must cover from shoulder to mid-thigh. This means no bare midriffs, see-through garments, tube tops, or short shorts/skirts. If you wear a basketball jersey you will need to wear a T-shirt underneath.

3. Your clothing must not be disruptive to the learning process. The following are examples of clothing which is prohibited:

    a. Clothing which bears any message considered to be disrespectful of country, school,     religion, or debasing the dignity of groups or individuals.

    b. Clothing which depicts alcohol, tobacco, drugs, obscenities, or provocative pictures.

    c. Clothing which shows affiliation or alignment with gangs, secret societies, or unauthorized organizations.

4. You may not wear hats, bandannas, hair rollers, or any other items covering your head.  Such things as headbands or hair clips are acceptable. There may be special events or activities during the school year when these items are permitted. If approved, you will be notified over the intercom or through the daily announcements.

5. You may not wear overcoats, out-of-doors clothing, or sunglasses. You are encouraged to keep a sweater or sweatshirts in your locker as temperatures can vary from one classroom to another.

What if I don't dress appropriately for school?

You will be sent to the office to speak to the principal, associate principal, dean, or counselor. One of several things could happen. You could:

    1. Be sent back to class with a warning.

    2. Be asked to change clothes, remove your coat or bandanna, turn your shirt inside out etc.

    3. Be instructed to call home for appropriate clothing.

If your wardrobe continues to violate the dress code, a referral will be written. The consequences may include detentions or super dentitions from school.

Telephone Usage

A pay phone for the use of the students is located in the building. During the school day, this phone is to be used for emergencies and only after the student has received permission from a staff member. During after school activities, the phone is available to arrange rides home. It should not be used for social calls. Students should have correct change when making a phone call.

The school WILL NOT remove students from class to answer phone calls. Telephone messages of an emergency nature will be delivered. Parents are urged NOT to call their child at school except in an extreme emergency.

Cell phones must be turned off during school hours.
