Namesake: Hubert H. Humphrey
Hubert Humphrey believed in public service. He was a four-time senator from Minnesota and was the 38th Vice President of the United States under Lyndon B. Johnson. Humphrey won his party's nomination for President in 1968, but he was narrowly defeated by his Republican opponent, Richard M. Nixon.
Humphrey was a passionate defender of human
rights: "The real strength of a free society is in its people and their
commitment to freedom and social justice." He was the principal sponsor of the
Food for Peace Program and of legislation to establish the Peace Corps. He also
helped to secure passage of the 1962 Test-Ban Treaty and the 1964 Civil Rights
Act.
