Honors Program Screening

Each year the District screens students who are not currently in the  Challenge or Honors program for possible participation in the Honors program at the middle school level. The purpose of the program is to provide students who have "exceptional ability" with learning experiences commensurate with their ability.

The program differs from the regular education program in a number of ways. At the middle school level, we offer Honors classes in math, science, language arts, and social studies. These classes are accelerated (advanced and at a faster pace) and/or enhanced with topics that are broader in scope, of greater depth, and of higher difficulty than those offered in the standard school program.

The identification procedure involves the collection of data from standardized achievement tests, academic performance, and professional evaluation (i.e. teacher and administration) of potential for success in the program.  A minimum standard of performance is required in each area for the identification process to proceed. If minimum standards are met, parents will be notified of their child's eligibility for placement. Placement recommendations are not made until the later part of May.

If you would like for your child to be screened for the Honors program, please contact the main office to obtain a parent permission form.
