PHYSICAL EDUCATION
BE PREPARED FOR PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
Students are required to participate in physical education class unless they
have a written note from a physician. The physician’s note must be on file with
the school nurse.
In special situations, parents may send a note to the nurse to alert the school
to a problem that does not necessitate student absence, but may require a
temporary modification to the physical education program. Generally, this
condition should be minor and not persist more then two days. The nurse may
request a doctor’s statement if the condition so warrants. Students should not
have more then two parent’s notes excusing them from class activities per
quarter. Any more then that, would suggest a long term problem that requires a
doctor’s care. They physical education staff and the nurse will address daily
student health related complaints.
All students are required to have gyms shoes, socks, and a Valley View uniform
for physical education classes. Students may wish to bring a towel from home.
Towels will not be provided by the school. Students will be expected to
participate in outdoor activities in the fall and spring. Students are
encouraged to have a sweatshirt or comparable clothing to wear on days when the
instructors allow extra clothing to be worn. It is also recommended that
students bring in an inexpensive pair of gym shoes to leave in their lockers.
Students will not be allowed to return to their lockers after the tardy bell
rings to get their uniforms. Students ARE NOT allowed to wear the same clothes
for gym that they have worn to school. In addition, students are not allowed to
wear another student’s gym suit. Failure to adhere to the Physical Education
Uniform Policy will result in disciplinary actions.
Each student will be assigned a gym locker. Students will be required to
purchase a school lock. Non-school locks are forbidden for use on school
lockers. It is important that students not reveal the combinations of their gym
locks to others. This will help safeguard their possessions. Students are not
allowed to share gym lockers.
The physical education classes will be going outside for physical activities
through the end of the first quarter. All classes will be outside if the
temperature is forty-five degrees or warmer.
In the fall and spring, classes participate twice weekly in a physical fitness
run that could be as long as one mile. If your child has a physical condition
that prohibits lengthy runs, please have your family doctor fax a note to the
nurse's office so that we can be informed of this condition. Parent notes for
minor ailments can be written for up to two days. Any illness or condition that
may cause a longer exception from physical activities will require a doctor's
notification.
Students are allowed to bring inhalers to school and carry them with them as
long as they have a form allowing the inhaler filed with the school nurse.
Gym suits may be purchased at The Locker Room, which is located on Schmidt Road
just off of Boughton Road. Please do not send blue jeans or jean shorts for your
child to wear for physical activity. If your child has an old pair of athletic
shoes, please have him/her put the shoes in his/her gym locker for emergency
purposes. Twenty-five percent of your child's physical education grade is
dependent on your child being fully dressed for physical activity on a daily
basis.
