Summertime Suggestions
It’s summertime, but can you believe that the
first grade teachers of Irene King Elementary School are already
getting excited about welcoming you to your first full year of
school? We have been very busy getting prepared for our year
together! Just as bees are drawn to flowers, first graders can’t
wait to come to school . . . and we can’t wait to meet you!
What did the bee say to the flower? Hello honey!
As you begin thinking about this exciting year
of first grade, we’d like to share some ideas with the hope that
these experiences, activities, and materials will model and
encourage reading and writing for your children. Our desire is to
have our students know by the end of first grade the true value of
reading and writing as part of their everyday lives. We’d love to
have you find time this summer to share the joy of reading and
writing together.
• Visit the Fountaindale Library often! This
lovely library filled with beautiful literature is right around the
corner, and there are a wealth of special programs and helpful
librarians ready to guide you.
• Please read aloud to your children. Snuggle
up together and share a book or two every day if you can. As you
read aloud, explain new words and talk about the deep thoughts in
stories.
• Create a writing center at home with paper, pencils, markers, and
crayons, and encourage your son or daughter to share their writing
with you. Talk about writing! (It’s the act of putting thoughts and
ideas into written words.) Children need LOTS of experience
expressing their thoughts aloud.
Learning begins at home, and the richness you share snuggled
together with a book or setting off on an adventure to the pond will
strengthen family closeness and improve literacy skills. Touch your
child’s life with joy today . . . and we will welcome them into our
classrooms in just a few months to begin our first grade adventure
together. Welcome to first grade!
