Miss Fuhr's Physical
Education Webpage

Wow! The end
of the year is a busy time for me this year! I am excited to tell you that there
are four big events happening from now until the end of the year! The first big
event was the "First and Goal: How to Score a Touchdown for a Healthy Life". We
were honored to have Staley da Bear, the official mascot of the Chicago Bears,
come to our school. The students had a lot laughs, but also learned about the
four "downs" to a healthy life-eating healthy, drink water, proper rest and
physical activity. They have the opportunity to participate in Staley’s Six Week
Challenge and enter a drawing to win some really cool prizes. We look forward to
having Staley back at our school next year!

 Our
second big event was Irene King’s first School Walk for Diabetes (SWFD). Miss
Freeman and I were busy planning this exciting event. The School Walk took place
on April 19th. School Walk for Diabetes helps raise money to support
diabetes research, education and advocacy through the American Diabetes
Association (ADA). We are aware that there are students at school who have
diabetes as well as some of their parents, other relatives or friends. Because
of this, we thought it would be extra special to raise money to help the ADA.
Miss Freeman and I would like to thank all of the parents who came out to
volunteer their time for the School Walk. It was a huge success and we couldn’t
have done it without you! As a school, Irene King traveled 1,433 miles!
Congratulations to Miss Ricketts (1st-2nd grade) and Mr.
Warpinski’s (3rd-5th grade) class for going the furthest
and winning another day of PE! Miss Freeman and I would like to thank everyone
who collected donations for the ADA. We were able to raise over $5,200 for the
ADA. Cameron Neely was the top fundraiser in the school. He raised over $1,000.
Way to go! Everyone did an excellent job. Miss Freeman and I are looking forward
to our event next year!
On Friday, May 4th, Irene King will hold
their second A.C.E.S. (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) event at 2pm. On the
first Wednesday in May each year at 10 a.m. local time, over seven million
school children from all fifty states and as many as 45 foreign countries will
be exercising simultaneously for a minimum of fifteen minutes. The purpose of
ACES is to call attention to the importance of youth fitness in a fun,
non-competitive atmosphere. The motivation for the students is knowing that
children from EVERY state will be participating all over the country with them.
Just think how exciting it would be if we could have over seven million students
exercising at the same time. It would be the world's largest physical education
class!
Finally is Field Day. Field Day will be held on Friday,
June 1st. More information will be sent home as well as a letter
asking for volunteers. If you are available that day, make sure to return the
volunteer slip. Be ready to spend the morning or afternoon (or both!) with your
student in this fun-filled day of activities!
