ADMISSION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL
In order to attend District 365U, a student must live with his parents
or legal guardians. The student must also be a resident of the
attendance area from which District 365U draws its students. Admission
is usually achieved by two methods: successful completion of fifth
grade, or transferring from an accredited public or private middle or
junior high school. Any special exceptions to this rule must be approved
by the superintendent. Students who do not live in District 365U or
whose parents or legal guardians do not live in the district will be
considered tuition students. The rate of tuition is established by law
and is based upon the per pupil cost of operating school during the
previous year. Parents or legal guardians are required to notify the
school district immediately when the family moves. In cases where a
student’s family moves within the District from one attendance area to
another during the school year, the Superintendent may authorize the
student to complete the current school year at the first attendance
center, providing the parents accept responsibility for transporting the
student.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS AND/OR PHONE NUMBER

STUDENT INSURANCE

students during the registration/ fee payment day in August. If you want
your child to have the student insurance, instruct him/her to pick up
the forms from the office. School insurance is not mandatory, but is
encouraged.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Specific school supply lists will be made available by each teacher, as
the necessary supplies differ from class to class. However, it is a good
idea to make sure that your student has a supply of No. 2 pencils, two
or three ballpoint pens, a scientific calculator (TI-34, TI30Xa, or the
equivalent), a generous supply of lined paper, and a notebook. Through
the year, they may be required to make other minor purchases such as
colored pencils, paste, etc., for specific projects that they are
assigned. An assignment notebook for each student is provided by the
school. A general list of supplies to begin the school year is available
at
http://www.vvsd.org/jjl/supplies.htm.

LOCKERS
Each student is assigned a hall locker and a gym locker for storage of
hats, coats, boots, and school related materials. The physical education
staff assigns gym locks. No other locks are to be utilized on either
hall or gym lockers. All students shall be subject to the following
provisions:
1. For the safety and welfare of the students, ownership of the locker
is maintained by the school district, and the students are granted a
limited use of the locker solely in accordance with this policy. Each
student will have his/her combination on file in the office.
2. The school district reserves the right to conduct periodic
inspections of lockers to ensure that illegal, unsanitary, or otherwise
harmful things are not placed in them.
The District also reserves the right to request assistance from law
enforcement officials to conduct reasonable searches of lockers for
illegal drugs, including searches conducted through use of specially
trained dogs, pursuant to 105ILCS5/10-22.00. This section constitutes
"Prior Notice" of the locker search procedures.
3. Students should always check that their locker is locked. Do not give
out locker combinations. If you have any trouble with your locker,
report the problem to the office. Students are not allowed to share
lockers.
4. Students are responsible for their own belongings. Do not tamper with
another student’s locker or anyone else’s locker.
5. The school cannot be responsible for reimbursements of student’s
missing possessions.
6. In accordance with Board Policy 7:140, search and seizure procedures
will be followed.
7. Disciplinary action from the violation of this locker policy and such
other rules adopted about lockers is specified in the middle school
discipline program.

STUDENT VALUABLES
Students are not to bring large amounts of money, radios, electronic
games, communication devices, tape recorders, cameras, skateboards,
roller skates, balloons, any current fads, or novelties to school. If a
student wears glasses or a watch, he/she is responsible for them at all
times. The student, not the school, is responsible for all personal
property and other items in his/her possession. Valuables must not be
kept in hall or P.E. lockers.
The school is not responsible for missing items including textbooks and
school materials.
In the event of lost or missing personal property, students should check
the lost and found, and then declare their loss in the office. Students
are responsible for the payment of lost and/or damaged textbooks.

the student’s responsibility to keep track of any merchandise purchased
and the money collected. Articles for any outside activity are not to be
sold in school.

USE OF TELEPHONES
During
the school day, this phone is to be used for emergencies and only after
the student has received permission from one of the members of staff.
During after school activities, the phone is available to students for
the purpose of calling parents for transportation. It should not be used
for social calls. Use of the office phones is discouraged.
The school will not remove students from class to answer telephone
calls. Telephone messages of an emergency nature will be delivered.
Parents are urged not to call their child at school except in the case
of extreme emergency.

VISITORS
All visitors to the building will report to the main office upon entry.
Parents or guardians who wish to speak to a particular staff member
should call the school in advance to arrange an appointment. Students
are not allowed to bring visitors to school without written permission
from the administration. All visitors are expected to behave in a manner
that does not impede, delay, or otherwise interfere with the orderly
conduct of the education program or any other activity occurring on
school property. If circumstances warrant, the school’s administrators
will take appropriate action.

THE PHOENIX EXPERIENCE ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM
The Phoenix Experience is comprised of two alternative programs, housed
in one wing of the former Bolingbrook High School. The Valley View
School District’s program services students in 8th, 9th, and 10 grades.
The Phoenix also is one of Will County’s Regional Alternative Program
sites, partnered with Plainfield School district, and accepts 9th
through 12th grade students. Valley View District students may be placed
in either program based on eligibility. Students are recommended by the
building administration for the program based on one or more of the
following:
1. The student has a history of low achievement or poor academic
performance.
2. The student has a pattern of poor attendance.
3. The student has continuously manifested misbehavior in school.
4. The student is experiencing a life trauma or situation that requires
a change in environment.
The curriculum includes courses in English, mathematics, science, social
studies, health education, and business education. Additional services
include counseling; character ed and social skills training. For further
information, contact the school administration.

LUKANCIC MIDDLE SCHOOL LAND HISTORY
Thank you to Mr. Peter Biggins for the following contribution to the
history of Lukancic Middle School: My great-great grandfather, Patrick
Biggins, an Irish immigrant, purchased the land on which the John J.
Lukancic Middle School is built. He purchased it from the
Illinois-Michigan Canal Commission in 1848. Here is a Web page that
provides more details:
