Social Studies: qtr. 1:

We will be starting with the Civil War.  Students will learning about slavery and how it drove our country in to the Civil War.   Students will also be experiencing an Underground Railroad simulation to put them in  the shoes of slaves.  We then will be learning about Reconstruction and how our country needed to be rebuilt after the war was over. 

Our second unit of study is Growth and Industries.  Students will focus on how our nation changed when it expanded its borders and grew larger in the 1800's. 

Our final unit for first quarter is the beginning of becoming a new nation.  Students will focus on the events that led the country to become a world leader and changes that the nation faced. 

 

Language Arts-We will be working on sentences, types of sentences, nouns ( proper/common, sing./pl, possessive) and verbs

We will also continue to work on our writing using the 6-trait writing format.

Reading : Forests of the World

The skill this week is compare and contrast.  Students will be working on how to tell how 2 things are alike and different.  The genre we will be working on is non-fiction.  A non-fiction article is one in a newspaper or magazine and presents facts and information.  The vocab skill we will be working on is homographs.  Homographs are words that are spelled the same way but are often pronounced differently and have different meanings.
