Welcome to Kindergarten!  My name is Mrs. Jordan, and I'm so excited for the upcoming school year!  We are approaching the first day of kindergarten, and I'd like to just add a few reminders to make this time as smooth as possible!

On Monday, August 25th, the Kindergarten teachers would like to invite you to attend our special "Meet and Greet" session from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.  This is a time where your child can visit the classroom and hopefully relieve some of those "first day jitters."  Please come and join us for an informal visit!

On Tuesday, August 26th, kindergarten students will attend their first day of school!  We invite parents and students to enter the building at the regularly scheduled time (8:55 for the A.M. session and 12:45 for the P.M. session).  Students can bring in backpacks and supplies on this date!  Parents will be encouraged to stay for the first 45 minutes of school in order to help children settle in and participate in a "getting to know you" session with Mrs. Jordan.  If you have any questions or concerns about these first few days, please e-mail me at jordang@vvsd.org.

What an exciting time...the first quarter of kindergarten! :) Kindergarten students will be ready for the first quarter report card if they have mastered the following skills:
  • Recognize all 35-39 letters (and don't forget our two extra: a, g)
  • Identify 11-12 of the sounds of all 21 consonants
  • Recognizing all four shapes (square, circle, rectangle, and triangle)
  • Understanding and using comparative words (above and below)
  • Sorting objects by color
  • Writing first and last names correctly (capital letters for the first letter, lowercase letters for the rest)

Another important 1st quarter focus is on behaviors in the classroom.  Students in the first quarter are expected to stay on task and behave with respect towards the teachers and fellow students.  Please work on all of these skills with your child!

A major focus for the year is learning the word wall words.  Please study our word wall words by reading them and writing them! By the end of the year, your child will be expected to know all of them!
