Behavior Plan:

Dear Parents,

Throughout the first week of school, the children and I have been working cooperatively to develop a positive classroom management system. Each child has their own “dog” template that is hanging up in the classroom. The dog will begin the day having a green bone in his mouth. If a child chooses not to follow the rules, he/she will then have an orange bone, to serve as a warning. If the child continues to misbehave, a yellow bone is used. As a result of a yellow bone, the child receives no power penny for the day and ten minutes in the “dog house,” thinking about his/her behavior. If a child moves to the red bone, a “think about it” sheet is sent home and/or a phone call home is made. The think about it sheet needs to be signed, completed, and returned the next school day. (On the back of this paper you will see an example of a “think about it” sheet.)

Together, we can ensure that your child has a green bone every day and earns a power penny every day. Every other Friday, the children will have a chance to “go shopping” with their power pennies that they have earned and they may be redeemed for special rewards, such as a note home from the teacher or a special backpack home. If you have any questions about this behavior plan, I will discuss it more in detail during Parent Orientation Night. Thank you for your support in helping create a safe and positive learning environment for every child.

Sincerely,

Ms. Kozerski

                  Spelling Tests

Dear Families,

Your second grader will begin to take a weekly spelling test. The list of spelling words will be sent home every Monday. There will then be a test over the ten spelling words on Friday of the same week. Please practice these words at home every night as part of their daily homework. You will notice that 5 out of the ten spelling words are called “word wall words.” Word wall words are high frequency words that are encountered numerous times when reading and added to our word wall board in our classroom. The students should be able to spell these words correctly throughout the year, versus simply memorizing them for Friday’s test. The remaining five words are from a word family. For example, the first word family is the word family “at”. The “at” family contains the words scat, flat, brat, splat, mat. The children will also have to write a sentence that I dictate for them at the bottom of the test, which includes the word wall words for that week.

The spelling test will be graded according to the following: correct spelling (under spelling and application on the report card) and correct sentence format (under grammar, mechanics and application on the report card).Bring your questions, or e-mail me at kozerskimavvsd.org.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education!

Sincerely,

Ms. Kozerski J
