at what we will study this year.

In language arts, our skills are the concepts of point of view, referents, analyzing text structure, vocabulary, spelling, prefixes and suffixes, context clues, drawing conclusions, making generalizations, identifying genres of literature, fiction and non-fiction elements, summarizing, character development, making inferences, figurative language, predicting, comparing and contrasting, author's purpose, cause and effect, main idea and supporting details, making personal connections to literature, using graphic sources, fact and opinion, and analyzing plot.

In writing, we work on narrative, expository, and persuasive writing. We continue to practice our writing skills while trying to improve creativity.  We are using the 6-Trait Writing Program to help us become better writers.  We also learn English grammar and correct spelling.

Social Studies

We start the school year learning about immigration.  Quarter 2 includes the industrial revolution and the rise of cities.  The third quarter focus is America as a World Power, WWI, the Roaring 20's, the Great Depression, and WWII.  In the last quarter, we study the Civil Rights Movement and events up to the present day.

Health

We will learn about human growth and development, safety, and the effects of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco on the body.

To learn about math and science topics we study, go to Mrs. L. Walsh's website.
