Counseling Services

The Phoenix Experience counselors are all masters level licensed clinical professional counselors or social workers.  Client contact ranges from individual  to group sessions.  Counselors at The Phoenix Experience aid the students in several areas such as:

  • Career development
  • Relationships issues/family and peers
  • Peer pressure
  • Anger management
  • Stress reduction
  • Conflict resolution
  • Substance abuse

Parent Night

Parent Night is a program offered five times during the school year.  This family program brings parents together to educate and support each other about various topics facing teens and their families such as:

  • Teen discipline behavior
  • Angry, violent student behavior
  • Motivating the unmotivated
  • Coping with teens
  • Stress, drugs, and nutrition
  • Communicating with teens
  • Building self-esteem with teens
  • Life after high school for students and parents

Often guest speakers are brought in to present and discuss the above topics.

Careers

Students at The Phoenix have several opportunities to explore future career options

Counselors assist students in becoming familiar with the CIS program.  Career Information System is a software program produced by the Illinois Department of Education which can accessed through the internet.  This program allows the viewer to gain information on 500 various occupations.  Information on wages, outlook, preparation, apprenticeships, and high school preparation are provided.  Users can also connect to related educational programs at any college or trade school in the state.

Links are also provided to a school where users can find out contact names, costs, as well as financial aid availability.  The program will also produce a school letter requesting catalogue and other information.  For individuals already out of school there is also a link to America's Job Bank:

  • Juniors and seniors attend a field trip to Joliet Junior College each spring
  • Military recruiters come to make presentations bi-monthly
  • Sophomores take the PLAN test which identifies academic areas of strength and weakness.  This test also includes an interest inventory
  • Eighth graders take the EXPLORE test which assists them in beginning their career exploration

Substance Abuse

The Will County Health Department offers a school based substance abuse program in various schools in Will County.  The Phoenix Experience is one of the schools the Health Department works with to offer this service.  There are two parts to the services that are offered, a drug education awareness class and/or individual treatment.  The counselor in charge of the program at Phoenix is Warren Buckner who is a master's level clinician as well as a CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.)  If you suspect your teen is involved with alcohol or other drugs, you may contact the school to access services.
