Math

-Memorize basic addition and subtraction facts through 12.
-Use flashcards to help build speed.
-Recognize coins and name their values.
-Add up a variety of like coin values.
-Tell time to the hour and half hour.
-Write a five sentence paragraph using one main idea (an opening sentence, three supporting sentences, and a
closing sentence). The paragraph should be indented.
-Use correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling most of the time.
-Memorize basic sight words.
-List words in word families.
-Use a variety of reading strategies to figure out unknown words:
*Make the sounds *Look for word parts *Look for picture clues *Skip the word. Finish reading the sentence. Go back and reread the sentence. *Ask, Does it make sense and does it sound right? |
BEGINNING THIRD GRADE EXPECTATIONS
READING/WRITING
Emphasize decoding skills.
Focus on phonics.
Students will
have used Early Preparation For Testing books in library
4th quarter.
All second grade will do same lessons, 3rd
grade will continue this in the coming year.
Use the 4 square writing method, concentrating on terminology, prepare to write one complete 5 sentence paragraph with a topic and closing sentence
Focus on varying your sentences, use of capitals and punctuation.
MATH
Master your basic facts.
Focus on subtraction facts
Use the terms borrowing and carrying in regrouping with your major focus on subtraction with regrouping
Fourth Grade Expectations
Math:
Memorized multiplication, addition, and subtraction tables.
Addition and subtraction of 1 to 4 digits is clearly understood.
Students can regroup (carry or borrow) and know to subtract down.
Place value to the hundreds and thousands is understood.
Students know how to round to the nearest 10 and 100.
Understanding of basic geometric forms.
Basic understanding of perimeter, area, and volume.
Extended response is understood explaining what was done and why
it was done to solve the problem.
Reading:
Phonics skills are used to decode words.
Fluency is at a 100 words per minute with 5 or less errors on a
4.1 reading level.
Vocabulary is well developed.
Comprehension skills are used to better understand stories like
predicting, compare/contrast, plot, set, character change, author
intent, sequencing, drawing conclusions, main idea/details, and
summarizing.
Writing/English:
Sentence structure is understood and
students can write a 5-sentence paragraph with support.
Students use descriptive words and transition words in their
writing.
Students understand the parts of speech of noun, verb, pronoun,
and adjective.
Abbreviations are understood and used where appropriate.
Students can write a well supported, focused, organized
5-paragraph essay.
Persuasive, narrative, and expository writing are all
differentiated and plans for each understood.
Students can make graphic organizers for writing assignments like
the 4 box plan, a house, or an idea web.
Students think of themselves as authors.
Social Studies:
Students understand what a community is and
why it was built (located) where it is.
Natural resources of a community are understood.
Basic understanding of how people work together to make a product
Basic level understanding of laws, Illinois government, and U. S.
A. government.
Different cultures and immigration are a developing concept.
Directions are taught and the compass rose is understood.
Maps and globes can be used to locate places.
Science:
Simple machines, the water cycle, food
chains, sound waves and desert habitats are understood.
The experimental method and data collection is understood.
Writing:
Use of complete sentences. (grammar and punctuation)
Understand of basic paragraphing.
Write a 3-4 paragraph developed essay in 40 minutes
Reading:
Employ fluent decoding skills; use of context clues.
Identify main idea and supporting details
Answer questions with support of your answer.
Math:
Understand multiplication and division facts, and place value to the hundred thousands
Understand basic geometry figures.
Recognize fraction basics (numerators, denominators, and write a fraction from a picture)
Respond in writing to open-ended mathematical questions.
