READING
... READING All of our students have the opportunity to participate in reading contests this year. Sponsored through our library/media center and Mrs. Lafond, students may participate in the Jackhammers reading program AND/OR the Six Flags, Six Hour reading program. JAMMER, the Joliet Jackhammer’s mascot, will be at the school on Thursday, January 31, to get the students excited about reading. Students who read books record the information on special forms. For each book the student reads, he/she advances a base. For every four books, a “home run,” the student receives a ticket voucher that will gain him/her entrance to the ballpark for any Tuesday regular season home game (May 27, June 17, June 24, July 15, July 29, Aug. 12, and Aug. 19. Each student can receive up to 7 ticket vouchers that can be used of the student and any guests on the dates listed above. KEEP READING and join Jammer’s Book Buddies! (R.C. Hill night will be June 17.) If your child completes six hours of recreational reading and sends in a green form, your child will earn one free admission ticket to any participating Six Flags theme park from June 19 to August 10, 2008. Tickets that are lost, stolen, or damaged cannot be replaced. SO, help your child by encouraging recreational reading at home. Sign their special forms (Jammer’s is blue and Six Flags is green). Return them to school by February 15. Ticket vouchers and/or tickets will be distributed to students in May. KEEP READING!!!!! |

MORE READING In case you are wondering and missing our other reading events, we want you to know they are coming! MARCH MADNESS, our school reading contest, is moving to April this year. Each year, our students decide how many pages (primary students) or books (intermediate students) they can read in a month. Goals are set and teachers and students work together to reach and then exceed their goal. Mrs. Ewald and Ms. Bowling are working on the silly stunt for classes that exceed their goal by 50%! BEDTIME STORIES night is moving to April as well. Scheduled for April 24, Bedtime Stories invites students, parents, staff, and guest readers to come to school in their pajamas to enjoy listening to stories. Students get the opportunity to hear a variety of guest readers share different books. Mark your calendar to make sure you save time to attend BEDTIME STORIES on April 24!

| We are happy to announce that R.C. Hill won the Fountaindale Library’s “Battle of the Cards.” This is the FIFTH year we have kept the plaque and won the books the library donates to the winning school! We had over 50% of our students turn in sheets indicating that they had library cards. Well done! A special thank you to Mrs. Piekarski for reminding our students and helping us win the Battle of the Cards. |
| NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY After spending much of the year trying to read all twenty books on the 2008 Monarch list, all kindergarten through third grade classes will be voting for their favorite book. The books have been out on a separate counter since last Spring and available for check -out. While we have read some of them during library class times, students have been encouraged to read as many as possible on their own or with family members. A check-off sheet with all titles listed has been available for record keeping, along with a Monarch Butterfly coloring sheet. We will be voting during the week of February 11 during library class time. Each grade level winner will be posted at school; however only one winner for all the grade levels is allowed for the final tally.
