Parent Link Calls

Please remember to keep the school office informed of any changes to the telephone numbers to contact you. We forward changes to our district office and then the changes are made to the Parent Link system.

Remember to LISTEN TO THE PARENT LINK MESSAGE when we send one. We only have three phone lines, so if everyone calls to see why we called, it will take a long time for you to get through to the school.

It is always possible to check the district website, watch the local TV stations, or listen to the radio to catch school closing information. Thank you for your help with keeping your contact numbers up-to-date!

PARENT REQUESTS FOR SPECIFIC TEACHERS

This is the time of year when we begin getting requests for specific teachers for the coming school year. While this was accepted for many years at R.C. Hill, we have joined the vast majority of schools in our district in discouraging parents from requesting a specific teacher for their child. This will be our fourth year with this practice.

Students are assigned to classroom groups by their current classroom teachers, with input from other staff members as appropriate. Your child’s current teacher(s) are in the best position to make classroom placement recommendations. Our staff members have worked with your child throughout the year and have knowledge of students’ academic, social, and emotional needs. We must consider many factors as groups are prepared, such as academic strengths and needs, social mixes, gender, individual learning styles, and student personalities. We also prepare class assignments keeping in mind students who would benefit from being together or separated, overall student behavior, student/teacher considerations, and class sizes. The object of the process is to produce the most effective combination of student groups. Parents may want to share information about their child’s learning style related to the reasons and balance considerations given above. Should you wish to make this information known to us, please send your comments in writing to Ms. Bowling before May 20, 2008. Requests for specific teachers are not appropriate.

Students will be informed of their class assignments on our “Back to School” day in August. This date is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, August 13. More information will be distributed as that time draws near. Check our end-of-year newsletter in June for specific time information.

**PARKING LOT WOES!

TRAFFIC SAFETY is a big concern for everyone! This is especially true around our school. We get most of our “complaints” about our parking lot. PLEASE observe good manners when driving and dropping off or picking up students in our parking areas. REMINDERS:

-Do not ask your child to walk through the parking lot without an adult. Even walking with an adult can be a problem. Many students are not tall enough to be seen by drivers.

-Observe the ONE WAY protocol of the parking lots. DO NOT drive the opposite way to avoid traffic.

-Try not to be in a hurry. All of the traffic is gone within ten minutes after the bell rings. A little time saved is not worth injuring a student.

-The center lot is for staff parking and bus pick up and delivery. There is no student drop off in the center lot!

STREET SAFETY

The Village of Romeoville provides crossing guards at Dalhart and Arlington and Dalhart and Belmont to help students and parent SAFELY cross the street. With the number of cars and buses that use our lots at the beginning and end of the day, traffic congestion can be very tight. Even so, we are asking parents to be patient and allow a few extra minutes to keep all students safe. PLEASE DO NOT ASK YOUR CHILD TO CROSS THE STREET EXCEPT AT THE CORNER BY THE CROSSING GUARDS! This includes walking with you! Walking across the middle of the street ESPECIALLY BY THE 7-11 teaches your child bad habits that may prove dangerous or even deadly. We set up the dismissal procedures to keep our children safe. We had one child hit crossing the street by 7-11 many years ago — while her mother watched! PLEASE USE THE CROSSWALK!!!

REMINDERS!

Reminder! If your child is absent from school, please take the time to contact the school to let us know that your child is absent. If you do not contact us, the school is required to contact parents at home or at work to find out why their child/children are not in attendance at school. You may use our 24-hour attendance line to call in your child’s absence. Requests for homework must be received by 9:00 AM on the day you wish to pick up homework. The office is open until 4:15 PM for you to pick up requested homework. If you child is sick, it is probably better to let him/her get missed work when he/she returns to school.

Remember! Valley View School District’s attendance policy and procedures are aligned with the Illinois School Code. The practice of recording absences as excused for family vacations taken during the school year was discontinued last year. A family vacation is not considered to be a valid reason for being absent under Valley View School District’s Attendance procedures.

Your child learns more when he/she is attending school. Please make every effort to get your child to school every day!

Early dismissal from school

Early dismissal from school may be necessary in the event of an emergency situation or severe weather conditions that develop during the school day. As soon as the decision is made to close the school, a Parent Link phone call will be placed to the family of all students. If you are at work during the day and have given us that number, you will be contacted at that number. Please note that Parent Link cannot dial extensions for large companies. Again, it is important for you to listen to the message that is sent.

It is also important for your child to know what to do in an emergency situation, such as getting home and not finding anyone there. Make sure he/she knows a neighbor that will be able to help out until someone gets home. This should be someone you have contacted about emergency help and would know to check with in an emergency (such as you getting stuck in traffic).
