We are nearing the holiday season. In social studies, we are learning about "places", i.e., the world, continents, countries, states, cities, towns, villages, etc. We donned our spacesuits and took a "google earth" space trip just to see "What in the world?" the world is! It was out of this world! If you would like to take a space trip at home, click on the "google Earth" link below to download it onto your computer. It is free and safe! Type in "Wood View Elementary": You will see our school! (This is a great way for your child to learn his/her address: When they type their address in, they can see their house!).

Now that we know all the cool words and what they mean, we have packed our travel bags and with passports in hand, we are having much fun learning about the holidays celebrated in December around the world: Hanukkah, Diwali, Los Posadas, St. Lucia, Christmas, and Kwanzaa.
After visiting and learning about a holiday, the children are writing down important words specific to that holiday and drawing a picture to correlate with their passport passage page. The children then receive that holiday's "passport" stamp.
Also, as part of our learning center activities, the first graders are using our classroom laptops to visit web sites (below) to reinforce what we are learning and play "learning" games about the holidays on which we are studying.
