Mrs. Anding's first grade created our first classroom book, I Learned to... This publication is the result of an extension of our first reading theme, My Friends by Taro Gomi. Each first grader authored his/her own page by citing something he/she learned from a "friend". Each first grader then drew his/her illustration to match his/her words.
The objective of this project was to present the connection of "word to print"; namely, that words written on paper are simply words we speak. The process began by reading My Friends. Each first grader was then asked to think of something he/she learned and from whom he/she learned it. Each first grader then shared his/her sentence orally with Mrs. Anding and classmates, using the patterned sentence from the book, "I learned to......from my friend/cousin/brother/sister.................. Using a laptop and projector, Mrs. Anding typed each student's sentence so the student and class could see his/her "spoken" words become "printed" words. Mrs. Anding then transferred each student's dictation to 12X18 construction paper and each student then illustrated his/her authored statement. The children as a whole then brainstormed a title for their book. The children decided on the title, I Learned to...
Enjoy!
