PBIS at Wood View

Positive behavior support (PBIS) is the application of a behaviorally-based approach to enhancing the efficiency of school, family, and community life.  It is designed to improve the link between research-validated data and the environment in which teaching, learning, and social development occurs. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining systems of support that improves lifestyles (personal, health, social, family, work, and recreation) for all children by making problem behavior less effective, efficient, and relevant and the desired behavior more functional and appropriate. Our goal at Wood View is to instill students with the desire to make the life-long choice to be respectful, responsible and safe at school, with their family, and in the community.

Clear Expectations:

The students are taught the clear expectations (not rules) for all of the locations at our school. In the beginning and periodically throughout the school year the students are taught centers and Cool Tools to learn and have consistent reminders of the expectations. The students know what appropriate actions and expectations to have at every location. Being upfront with students and teaching them all the expectations eliminates any confusion or misunderstanding.

Cool Tools:

These are mini lessons to teach clear and consistent expectations to all the students.  All teachers teach the same information with the same language.  This way all the expectations are clear across the board. Cool Tools are taught in two week blocks and then are reviewed periodically throughout the year.

Rubies:

Rubies are awards given to students who are meeting the school expectations for behavior.  The students must collect them and be responsible for them.  The Rubies can be redeemed for items in the Ruby Case or for extra one on one time with adults in the building.

We can not expect the students to know what we are looking for all the time.  We have to teach them the required expectations in all environments for them to be successful.  Assuming the students know what we are looking for does not lead to success.  With the application of PBIS students learn the clear expectations for success.
