Mrs. Charlene Smith-4th Grade teacher
Hello families! I am Char Smith, and I am a fourth grade teacher here at Independence School. I've been a teacher here since 2003, however I have been teaching since 1993! I've taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, but the majority of my career has been in 4th grade. I have a bachelor's of science degree in elementary education from Northern Illinois University. I also received my master's degree in teaching and leadership from St. Xavier University. Also, I've been recently endorsed in English as a second language from University of St. Francis. I really enjoy teaching 4th grade because the students are able to use all of the foundational skills they learned in the primary grades and do so much more with them. They really become deep thinkers in fourth grade!
Besides teaching, I'm a busy mom of 5 kids. My oldest son, Joshua, will be attending Central Michigan University this fall and majoring in Computer Science. My oldest daughter, Hannah, is entering 7th grade and loves drama and all other fine arts. My twin daughters, Amanda & Carolyn, are entering 2nd grade and are Irish dancers. Finally, I have my youngest son, Tommy, who is turning 5 in late fall and entering his last year of preschool.
I look forward to getting to know the families of all my students and working together to instill a love of learning in your child!
