Dear Valley View School District Parent,
We recognize that a safe learning environment is critical to help each child achieve academic success. The negative impact of bullying has been well publicized in the national news. We encourage you to discuss bullying and its negative impact with your child.
What is bullying?
Bullying is not a single act of unkindness. It must contain three components:
1. It is a repeated act.
2. It is meant to hurt or humiliate another person.
3. It involves an imbalance of power. Bullies choose targets that they perceive are unable or unwilling to defend themselves.
Our district is taking steps to ensure that your child is in a positive safe environment. All Valley View schools use Sprigeo, an online anonymous report tool, to report bullying incidents and school safety threats. Sprigeo gives your child another medium to communicate with our school if a bullying or school safety incident occurs and they are uncomfortable reporting the incident directly to a staff member. All information sent through the Sprigeo system goes directly to authorized school personnel through a secure online connection. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance.
How does the Sprigeo system work?
Students can access the reporting form directly through the link listed above, or they may go directly to www.sprigeo.com
. After completing the reporting form and clicking the “Go” button, the report details are sent in a secure email to our authorized school personnel. Once received, the report will be promptly investigated.
Does the school receive false reports?
Over 95% of reports sent through the Sprigeo system have been confirmed as authentic requests for help with a bullying incident or school safety threat. And although reports can be sent anonymously, over 90% of students choose to include their name. Unlike text messages or Facebook posts that can be shared among students, Sprigeo reports are viewable only by school personnel, minimizing the impact that one student has to falsely accuse or abuse another student.
Why is there a need for an online reporting system?
Ideally, a student will confide in a trusted administrator or teacher. However, research confirms that the number one reason that children do not report bullying or abuse is the fear of retaliation from their peers. The Sprigeo reporting form can be accessed from the privacy of a home computer or on other Internet equipped device, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student.
If you or your child does not have access to the Internet, incidents can be reported by calling the following phone number and leaving a detailed message: 815-372-6555.
If you have any questions about Sprigeo or bullying, please call your school administrator. A copy of the district Harassment/Bullying policy can be found in the student handbook. Your child’s safety is our number one concern.
