• Hello Husky Families!

I am very excited to continue being part of the Hermansen learning community for the 2020/21 school year as Principal.  I look forward to getting to know you and working together to help your child succeed.  As parents and guardians, I understand that you are the most important teachers in your child’s life and it is with that understanding I appreciate the role you and I play in a partnership that will assist your child in achieving their academic goals.

I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with a brief overview of the path that has led me to Hermansen Elementary School as Principal.  I earned my bachelors in Elementary education, with a minor in philosophy from Lewis University, a master’s degree in reading and literacy and masters in administration and leadership from Benedictine University.  Prior to embarking on a journey in education, I worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 14 years as a clerk, mail-handler, mail-carrier and a part-time supervisor.  I began my career as an educator 13 years ago in several roles, first as a reading specialist, then as a third grade and gifted education teacher at Harnew Elementary School in Oak Lawn, Illinois.  As I transitioned to Valley View School District , I taught 7th grade language arts at Brooks Middle School, facilitated professional development as a Coordinator at the Administrative Center and most recently, in the role of Assistant Principal at Brooks for the last four years.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences at every level, but even more so, my time in the classroom helping students and building partnerships with families.

During my tenure in Valley View, I received “Teacher of the Year” from Walmart in 2007, I taught a reading and literacy course for a masters reading specialist program at Benedictine University for two years, and served as Principal of the Summer Learning Experience at Hermansen for two summers.  I currently reside in Bolingbrook Illinois and enjoy reading and writing poetry, reading non-fiction, traveling, dancing, golfing, and looking at all sports, as I am a die-hard Cubs fan!  In addition, I adore spending time with my two daughters and five grandchildren, soon to be six!  I am honored to be of service to the students and families of KLH, and look forward to working in partnership with your child’s teachers to enhance his/her learning experiences.   If you have any questions, comments or concerns, I am easily accessible via email or by phone.  Please feel free to contact me at furtutela@vvsd.org  or 815-886-7581 ext. 6750, at your convenience.
