Ms. Eileen Small
Hi! I'm Eileen Small a Special Education teacher here at Irene King Elementary School. I've been working in the district for about ten years now. I started co-teaching in a thrid grade classroom and then moved to co-teaching second grade for almost eight years. This coming year, 2020-2021, I've been asked to move up with some of my former students in 4th and 5th grade to continue to support them as they grow. Although I will miss the second grade;I am excited to support students and create new memories with them in the upper grades. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Governor State University and a Master's degree in the Art of Teaching Special Education from National Louis University. As a young child I struggled in school. I had to work very hard to understand certain subjects and school wasn't always a place I looked forward to going. I knew I could learn, but I learned differently than the average student. I became a Special Education teacher because I wanted to help all children learn in their unique way. Every child deserves a quality education with respect and dignity no matter how they learn. I hope to make learning interesting, fun, and accessible to all children.
A bit more about me: I used to ride and compete in horse shows and I was a certified therapeutic riding instructor for six years at the Hansen Center in Burr Ridge. I don't own horses anymore, but I still go horseback riding whenever I get the chance. I have three beautiful daughters. I am an animal lover and have recently adopted a mama cat and her kitten. I have to say I am living my career dream and love coming to work.
