Mr. Darren DeGroff
I joined the faculty of Humphrey Middle School as a social studies teacher in August 2004. Prior to entering the field of education I worked as a CNC operator in a powdered metal factory for 11 years. In 2001, I decided to enroll as a full time student at Northern Illinois University in order to obtain my teaching certificate. At NIU I obtained my Bachelors of Science degree where I majored in History. As my graduation from NIU neared I completed my student teaching program at Humphrey Middle School. I enjoyed my time student teaching at Humphrey so much I decided to apply for a teaching position and was soon offered a position as an 8th grade social studies teacher. From 2004-2012 I taught 7th and 8th grade social studies at the standard and honors levels. In 2012 I moved from the classroom to the front office where I served as one of Humphrey's Dean of Students for two years. Following the 2014 school year I elected to return back to the classroom and my true passion, teaching social studies. Besides teaching I have coached the Humphrey boys baseball team since 2004. I also sponsor the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. During the summer months I enjoy traveling around the country. Over the past several years my wife Lori and I have traveled to Ohio, South Dakota, and Tennessee. The mountains of eastern Tennessee have quickly become our favorite summer vacation destination.
