Degrees and Certifications:

BA in Education MA in Education and Leadership

Mrs. Monica Engel

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Education from National College of Education, which is now called National Louis University, and a Masters Degree in Education and Leadership from St. Xavier University. I have been in education for 29 years, 26 of them in public school. During this time I have taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades in Lockport and various Valley View District schools.

My husband, Steve, and I have been married for 31 years. We have lived in the Valley View School District our whole marriage. We have two children, Meghan, 28, is a graduate from Romeoville High School, and a graduate from Illinois State University. Joe is 26 and also a graduate of Romeoville High School. He is a graduate from Northern Illinois University. My daughter was married last Fall so now I have a son-in -Law!  In my free time I like reading, going to the movies and baseball games. My family is a split baseball family with the boys being Cub fans and the girls White Sox fans. (Which is the best team!) I love anything CHOCOLATE and going out to places like TGI Fridays or Panera. As a family we love hanging out at home, or traveling.

Five years ago we adopted our first dog, Scrappy. We loved him so much we decided one year later we adopted another dog, Lady. We now have Terrier mix (Scrappy, a boy, and a Clumber Spaniel, Lady). I love having dogs!

An education is the most precious thing a person can have. I consider it an honor to be able to be a part of a child’s educational process. I say “part” of a child’s education because I believe it is a process that includes the parents, the child and the teacher. It is a triangle that must work very closely together to reach the ultimate goal of creating an educated adult. I encourage parents to work with their children on assignments just as I work with them in the classroom. Children learn at different rates and in different ways and my classroom teaching style reflects that. I believe children learn from each other so we work in partners and cooperative groups, we explore and explain with each child working towards his potential and being encouraged to do just a “little bit more”. All of this is accomplished in an organized, structured manner.
