Degrees and Certifications:

Ms. Laurie Figlewicz

I have been a full-time teacher for the Valley View School District since 1998. I spent three years at the Phoenix Experience Alternative School as a history and English teacher for 8th to mainly 10th grade students. Then, I went to Humphrey Middle School for the next three years as an eighth and seventh grade Language Arts teacher. When I found out that the original Bolingbrook High School was going to be made into a middle school, I was anxious to be part of this new staff. I have been at Brooks Middle School since its inception, which is now in its seventeenth year. I have taught sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Language Arts classes since I have been here. Since the 2015-2016 school year, I have been a sixth grade Language Arts teacher. The sixth grade team is awesome! I love working with the students, parents, and staff. It's amazing how much the sixth graders mature and learn over the course of a school year.

On a more personal note, I went to Valley View schools from a kindergartner to my senior year at Bolingbrook High School. I am a total product of this school system. I went to Oak View Elementary School, Jane Addams Middle School, and Bolingbrook High School. I was a proud member of the Class of 1986 at BHS. If you want to do some quick mental calculations, you can figure out how old I now am. I always tell students that I'm ancient. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Illinois University and my Master of Science degree as a Reading Specialist from University of St. Francis. I am also the very proud mother of a senior in high school this year, my daughter, Emma. I am definitely not ready to be sending her off to college next year. Have you looked at the cost of college, yikes!

This school year is going to be unlike any other I have ever taught and my student have ever experienced. We are all going to be learning together to how to create an exciting and meaningful remote learning experience! We will be having class every day for Language Arts, but it just will be done over the computer, instead of in-person. Hopefully, we will be able to get back into the classroom, as soon as it is safe for us to all be there together. You can always reach me over my school email at You can also call the school at 630-759-6340. My plan period is during Block 1, and I can also be reached after 2:35. If a student is having trouble with an assignment, we can always arrange a private Zoom meeting to go over the area in question. I will assign all work over your child's Google Classroom page, and I will send out the weekly Zoom meeting address ahead of time on the Classroom page.

Working with your children is a new and exciting experience every single day! That is what I love about teaching middle schoolers-you never know what they are going to do and say next!
