Welcome to First Grade at Independence Elementary School! I have been teaching first grade at Independence since 1999. First grade is a year of discover and wonder not just in academics, but also in social/emotional development!
Language Arts (LA) consists of phonemic awareness, phonics, word study, writing, grammar and reading. Reading is not just recalling words on the page. Students first must master listening, speaking, and writing of letter sounds/letter corralation before reading can begin. Once this is done, students become excited about different genres of text, develop understanding and write about what they have read. Social Studies will be intigrated into the LA section of our day.
Grammar is introduced in a formal framework in first grade. Jolly Grammar will be used to discover: adjectives, nouns, verbs, and many more aspects of writing sentences and paragraphs.
Eureka math is a logical approach to learning about number relationships in addition/subtraction and properties of base ten, measurement and data collection, and shapes and attribute of 2 or 3 dimensional shapes.
Science: Science Technology Engineering and Math STEM: First grade will be studying Animal Adaptations, Our Place in the Universe,
