Ms. Alexa Kalata
Hello, and welcome to my page!
My name is Lexa Kalata and I am one of five teachers in the self-contained Structured Teaching Learning Room (STLR) Autism program. While my collegiate career spans from Western Illinois to Illinois State, I completed my undergraduate degree from Aurora University in 2014 with a Bachelors in Special Education, Learning Behavior Specialist 1. I started higher education thinking I wanted to be a photo-journalist who travels the world reporting breaking news stories. But in the summer of 2009, I was hired as an early childhood paraprofessional and fell in love with working in the classroom. During my time in University, I worked as a caregiver for a family of medically fragile triplets, and held a long-term part-time position at a group home for Deaf adults where I began my training in American Sign Language. Throughout my student career, I volunteered teaching English to non-native speaking adults, and worked many summers as a teaching assistant during extended school year programs. Throughout my 8 years in Valley View, I have taught a spectrum of students, ranging from first through fifth grade! I have been an instructor in the STLR program since 2014, and obtained my Registered Behavioral Technician certificate in 2015 while working respite care under an ABA therapist.
Since 2017, I have held a position on the Union Executive Board of the Valley View Council as the Safety Chair collaborating with the VVSD Safety Committee, and added Education Chair in 2019. This term, I am the representative for the STLR program on Hermansen's building leadership team. In 2019, I joined several of my fellow STLR teammates as a coach for Hermansen's Girls on the Run program. And while teaching remotely this past semester, I trained to became a Seesaw "Pioneer" to better serve our students with specialized needs, and was just invited to become a Seesaw leader in the "Ambassador" program for Hermansen!
When I am not at school, I am either spending down time with my STLR cohort or spending quality time with my beloved nieces. I come from a large family who loves to vacation on Lake Michigan in the summers and I love traveling the world with my journal and my camera. I am a big believer of self-care, which I practice with art, crafts, and DIY projects, and am currently learning calligraphy and honing my canvas painting skills.
You can always reach me via email firstname.lastname@example.org and when school is in session, by telephone to the main office at (815)886-7581.
