Mrs. Rebecca Schuman

Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself.  I am Mrs. Schuman the full time music teacher at both Tibbott and Oak View Elementary Schools.  I am very excited to share my love and knowledge of music with your children again this school year.

I grew up in Bolingbrook and attended Wood View Elementary, Humphrey Middle School, and graduated from Bolingbrook High School. After high school graduation I attended North Central College located in Naperville, IL to pursue my dream of becoming a music educator and performer.  I graduated in 1998 with my B.A. in Vocal Performance, Music, and Music Education K-12 with an emphasis in Choral Conducting.  I have completed a Masters in Special Education and I am currently pursuing a 2nd Masters in Curriculum and Instruction: SEL, Trauma, and Resilience; which I will have complete in the summer of 2021.

I have been teaching music for 22 years and have had the opportunity to teach at various grade levels K-12.  Over the last eleven years of my teaching career I have been teaching in VVSD.  I have taught music at R.C. Hill, Irene King, Beverly Skoff, Hermansen, Pioneer, Jonas Salk, and Tibbott.  I also had the honor and opportunity to direct the children’s cast and chorus in the 2014 spring musical of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor DreamCoat” at BHS.  I have had the honor of giving back to the community I grew up in and currently reside in.

Besides teaching my general music classes, I act as the VVSD K-5 Elementary Music Team Leader.  I have been the team leader for the last 8 years and take great pride in leading my team. For the last 3 years I have also acted as the VVSD K-5 Music Leader for the PERA Type II Music Subcommittee.  I have lead the District K-5 Music team in the development and completion of our K-5 Music Curriculum, Maps, and Common Assessments. Our K-5 Music Curriculum was approved by Senior Administration in the summer of 2013 and was fully implemented at the K-5 level, district wide the fall of 2013 and again updated in 2019 to align with the new State and National Standards including our State SEL Standards in Music Educations. I lead my team into develop and revising new assessments, curriculum activities, plans, resources, professional development, and team collaboration on a yearly basis where we are training and integrating technology, college and a career readiness, lifelong learning, SEL for all learners, how to create accommodations/modifications for all learners, and the newest techniques recommended from ISBE, Nafme, ILMEA, and ACDA.

I have been able to host and provide the opportunity for my team to attend several Professional Development workshops and opportunities; through the approval and support of our VVSD Senior Administration, at IMEC conference that takes place yearly in Peoria and provided opportunities within our district with collaboration of other VVSD Staff members and outside sources such as VVEC where we met and attended workshops with Jim Gill and recently with Scott Edgar from Lake Forest College who has his PhD in Music Education, Band direction, and SEL in Music Education.

I meet and collaborate monthly with the K-5 music teachers on Early Release meetings to make sure our curriculum is aligned and that we are providing the best Music Education we can to all students. I plan to continue to teach and lead the K-5 team as we create, develop, and modify new assessments and activities to benefit the students of VVSD in the years to come.

If you would like to learn more about the K-5 Music Curriculum or take a look at VVSD K-5 Music Curriculum Maps please feel free to contact me at:  I am more than happy to share them with you and all the wonderful things your children will be learning in music.

Outside of teaching music in VVSD I teach both private voice and piano instruction and perform as well.  I continue to sing for weddings, receptions, in bands, and other special events as well throughout the Chicago area.  Performing is one of my passions outside of teaching music.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at I look forward to a fabulous year at both Tibbott and Oak View!
