VVSD Staff Spotlight- Victoria Miller, 3rd Grade Teacher, Irene King Elementary

There are many theories about why just saying the word “fraction” to a student causes fear and angst.  Is it because fractions break many of the “rules” about whole numbers? Is it because fractions require their own vocabulary? Or could it be fractions are an abstract concept students struggle to picture in their minds?

We found some answers to those questions in the classroom of Irene King 3rd grade teacher Victoria Millier. Victoria grew up as a VVSD student (Bolingbrook HS ’13) who was intimidated by math, but as a teacher, Victoria teaches concepts such as fractions by using students to create models making fractions more visual and interactive.
