Bolingbrook HS Art Teacher Featured on “Learning to Win”

During halftime of WCIU’s broadcast of the Morgan Park-Bolingbrook boys’ basketball game on Mon. Jan. 21,, Bolingbrook HS Visual Arts Teacher Ms. Donna Franks-Tapley was featured in the “Learning to Win Segment”.  Weigel Broadcasting and WCIU were very courteous in sharing the feature with us to share with you. Lukancic Honors “Torch of Excellence” Nominees

The Lukancic Middle School staff was recently asked to nominate students for the Lukancic “Torch of Excellence Awards”.  The criteria for nominations were students who demonstrate academic excellence, academic growth, or outstanding leadership.

The nominees were brought together on Thu. Jan. 17 to share a breakfast with their families in the gym.  Lukancic 8th grader Rylie Newman-Gyang is an outstanding representative of the students given the Torch of Excellence.  Rylie was nominated by social studies teacher Mr. David Zucker.  Watch the video to learn more about Rylie.

Dean Arlene Lackings- Bolingbrook HS

Dean Arlene Lackings serves Bolingbrook HS as a Dean of Students for Grades 10 & 12.  Dean Lackings is currently in her 15th year at BHS and has served in a variety of roles including: teacher, coach, dean of students and most importantly, a leader who conveys to students what it takes to be successful.  Those lessons often start with reminding students to do their best to make their “today”, better than their “yesterday”. 

In addition to her role as Dean of Students, Dean Lackings also oversees peer mentors and is a mentor herself for students in the McKinney-Vento Program.  She has also served as Summer School Coordinator, special education department chair, professional learning team leader, assistant girls track coach and a tutor for homebound students.

BHS 8th Grade Family Night

Preparations are underway in both VVSD high schools for the arrival of the Class of 2023 as freshmen next fall.  Come along with us to Bolingbrook HS for their 8th Grade Family Night and hear BHS Principal Dr. Jason Pascavage introduce the Class of 2023 to the expectations for all Raiders.


Black History Month Celebration Set for Feb. 9

Black History Month Awareness Events

The Black History Month Awareness Club & Valley View School District Present the 21st Annual Community Wide Black History Month Celebration “Soaring to New Heights” on Sat. Feb. 9 from 2-5 p.m. in the Roger and Pat Claar Family Auditorium at Bolingbrook HS.  Admission is free.


Kudos for Noteworthy Achievements

Goal 3 Danielle Leonard Keri Loftus

Two Bolingbrook HS staff members have earned designation as National Board Certified Teachers.  Mrs. Danielle Leonard (left photo, far left with her students) is a Special Education Teacher and Case Manager who is in her 11th year as a teacher at BHS.  Ms. Keri Loftus (right photo, leading students in a discussion) is a Special Education English Teacher who also holds a Master’s Degree in Multicategorical Special Education from St. Xavier University.

Bolingbrook HS Senior Tariq Griffin (right) as Othello with Spencer Avery as Iago in the BHS production of Shakespeare’s “Othello”.

Bolingbrook HS Senior Tariq Griffin has been selected to participate in the  2019 Illinois High School All-State Theatre Festival.  In fact, Tariq has been cast in the lead role of the Festival’s production of In the Heights.

Tibbott Random Act for Web BJ Ward 3rd graders Romeoville HS DECA Students

Left- A random act of kindness from one Tibbott Elementary School student to another captured by the office staff.

Center- B. J. Ward Elementary students demonstrate impromptu, planning, and collaboration skills.  This was not an assignment, it was organized and executed by the students.

Right- Romeoville HS sent 28 students to the West Suburban DECA Sectionals in Rosemont. Quick Notes- The next meeting of the Valley View School District Board of Education is on Monday, January 28, at John J. Lukancic Middle School, 725 W. Normantown Rd, Romeoville IL.  The meeting will be called to order at 6:30 p.m. and the Board will vote to go into Executive Session.  The Public Session of the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. In accordance with the Open Meetings Act, the Agenda for the meeting will be posted no later than 48 hours prior to the start of the meeting.  Click here to view the Agenda

The Bolingbrook Park District Winterfest “Flurries and Fun” is coming up on Sat. Feb. 9 from 10 am - 2 pm at the Annerino Community Center. There is no charge to attend the event. Heart Haven Outreach

Northern Illinois Food Bank

The Northern Illinois Food Bank is conducting mobile food banks and micro pantries in the vicinity in the near future.  There will be a mobile food bank available at White Oak Public Library-Romeoville Branch on Mon. Feb. 11 from 4-6 p.m.  B.J. Ward Elementary School on Thu. Feb. 28 from 4-6 p.m. Micro Pantries are designed to allow anonymous food pick-up for those in need and a drop-off point for those who wish to help. Micro pantries are accessible 24 hours a day.
