Tibbott Students Celebrate Mexico Independence Day with Honores a la bandera

Honores a la bandera

The 3rd and 4th grade dual language teachers at Tibbott Elementary School and their students replicated “La escolta de bandera” in celebration of Mexico Independence Day.  This is a traditional Independence Day activity in which a group of youth present the Mexican flag while the Mexican National anthem is sung.

The day commemorates when Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo called for Mexico’s independence in 1810  by delivering a passionate speech in the town of Dolores and ringing the town’s church bells. Hidalgo’s speech became known as the "Grito de Dolores” (The Cry of Dolores), and marked the beginning of the eleven-year Mexican War of Independence in which Mexico gained freedom from Spanish colonial rule that had lasted for over three centuries.
