October 21 Message to VVSD Families from Superintendent Kinder
Photos from the October 20 VVSD Portrait of a Learner Design Team Meeting
Last night we launched an exciting engagement and visioning effort with the introduction of the “VVSD Portrait of a Learner” process. More than 100 diverse stakeholder representatives, including current and former students, parents, staff, community partners, and community leaders, came together to begin a dialogue that will culminate in the development of a “VVSD Portrait of Learner”. These stakeholders comprise the Portrait “Design Team” and are charged with:
- Considering landscape shifts in the changing world: workforce, pace of change, global shifts, and human interaction
- Giving input on our collective aspirations for every learner in VVSD
- Considering critical competencies (skills, habits of mind) that we want our children to develop, in addition to strong academic skills
- Giving input to develop a shared vision to develop the “VVSD Portrait of a Learner”
The Portrait process will conclude in January, and then in February, we will present the proposed VVSD Portrait of Learner to the community and seek approval from the Board of Education. The VVSD Portrait of a Learner will then serve as a catalyst for strategic planning, system improvement, and an even greater ability to provide meaningful and equitable experiences and outcomes to prepare every learner for postsecondary success in a changing world and workforce. Please stay tuned for periodic updates.
Here are a few important reminders:
- Take a moment to make sure your contact information is up-to-date in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. This is the most direct way we use to communicate with you. This will ensure you receive important information in the event of transportation delays/adjustments, emergency ELearning notifications, or other important safety messages.
- Remind your children to stay vigilant with personal health hygiene practices and monitor your child’s health daily. As a school community, we are doing a commendable job with COVID mitigations to reduce risk of spread; however, more time indoors in cooler weather, plus cold and flu season will present us with additional challenges in the upcoming months.
- Parent-Teacher Conferences will be next Thursday evening and during the day on Friday. There are no classes for students on Friday, October 29. If you haven’t done so already, you can sign up for a conference online.
Thank you for your continued partnership,
Rachel Kinder, Ed.S

VVSD Staff Spotlight- Cathy Besler, Bolingbrook HS Dean of Students
Our Deans of Students in VVSD are a vital component of our student services staff who respond to the needs of our students in, and outside of our classrooms.
Bolingbrook HS Dean of Students Cathy Besler began her career in education as an English teacher. Her colleagues noticed that she had a gift for being able to connect with students who were struggling in school because of non-academic issues.
That led her to become a dean, a career in which she has the opportunity to use her talents to serve, and make a positive impact upon, greater numbers of students.
