VVSD World Language Students Experience Mock Job Interviews in Spanish

Mock Job Interviews

Another indicator of a return to normalcy in VVSD is the return of the mock job interviews conducted in Spanish for VVSD World Language students.  The interviews serve three purposes: First, to give students a chance to use their additional language skills in a job interview setting; second, it is the culmination of a learning unit exploring the education of Latinos in the United States.

The third benefit is our students are introduced to business and community leaders who speak their language.  Our thanks to all the community leaders who volunteered to assist in this project, especially Fountaindale Public Library Deputy Director Nancy Korczak. Nancy and Romeoville HS senior Denise Orizaba allowed us to sit in on their interview, and after the interview was over, Denise shared with us what the experience was like for her.

VVSD Staff Spotlight- Patti Arriola, Brooks Middle School Executive Secretary

Patti Arriola

We close our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with the story of Brooks Middle School Executive Secretary Patti Arriola.  Her parents are Italian, but moved to Argentina where Patti and her brother were born.  Patti’s family then emigrated to the United States.

The only language Patti knew how to speak when she went to her first day of school in the United States was Spanish.  Before she could learn anything, she had to learn to speak English.  By the way, among the things Patti had to know to pass her American citizenship test, were the names of all nine Supreme Court justices.  Ironically, her brother is now an attorney!
