VVSD Staff Spotlight- Elizabeth Mazur RN, School Nurse, Independence Elementary

Elizabeth Mazur

Next week is National Nurses Week that honors all those who answer the call to care for their community and their patients.  More specifically, Wed. May 11 is National School Nurse Day that honors those who serve in school settings.

In VVSD, we are fortunate to have such a caring and professional school nurse staff.  In celebration of our school nurses, we spotlight Elizabeth Mazur, RN, Independence Elementary School Nurse.  She started her nursing career in orthopedics, but did some substitute school nursing and realized how rewarding it is to serve students.

USMC Cpl. Matthew Breen’s Surprise Homecoming Visit to His Sister at Wood View

Cpl Matthew Breen Homecoming

Prior to Monday, the last time Wood View 5th grader Emma Breen saw her brother Matthew, Emma was Wood View 3rd grader Emma Breen.  Specifically, the last time Matthew and Emma saw each other in-person was February 2020.

Think for just a moment about how much our world has changed since those pre-pandemic days.  Matthew is serving our country in the United State Marine Corps mostly stationed in Asia.  So, in addition to the COVID restrictions of the US military, he has also been subject to the restrictions on travel put into place by the host countries.  In the case of many of the Asian countries, those restrictions have been among the most comprehensive in the world.

Matthew came to Wood View Elementary to surprise his sister and it took Emma a moment before she realized her brother was standing at the front of the classroom.  After the reunion, Wood View students and staff lined the hallways to show their appreciation to Cpl. Breen for his service to our country.
